Drunk Driver Injures Garland Police Officer On George Bush Tollway

Garland Police Officer Jason Voelz was involved in a drunk driving accident when an intoxicated driver crashed into him shortly after 1 a.m. on Sunday morning on the George Bush Tollway at Holford Road. Voelz, a five year veteran, had arrested a female prisoner for outstanding warrants. After he placed the woman in the back seat of his squad car he was standing on the side of his car when another driver veered onto the shoulder of the road and hit the squad car and the officer.

Voelz was flown to Parkland Memorial Hospital in Dallas in serious condition. He has several broken bones and serious surgery will be needed. The female prisoner and the suspected drunken driver were taken to Baylor Medical Center of Garland with less serious injuries.

Statistics show that in between Thanksgiving and the New Year, alcohol related accidents increase. My thoughts and prayers go out to the Garland officer and his family. It is very unfortunate that this drunk driving idiot didn't make the decision to call a taxi, call a friend or just sleep it off. This intoxicated driver will defiantly be spending some time behind bars.

Interstate 2 Car Accident Kills Two ,One From Red Oak & Another From Glen Heights

Two people killed on Interstate 20 in a motor vehicle crash in Arlington, Texas are identified, yesterday I blogged on a accident involving a tractor-trailer truck on I 20 in Arlington, Texas. At the time, the two people who died in the three-car collision were unidentified. Arlington Police Department has now identified the driver of the Toyota as Jason Futrell, of Red Oak and Heather Futrell of Glen Heights. According to the Arlington Police, Mr. Futrell was driving eastbound in his Toyota when it changed lanes as it approached New York Avenue. His Toyota hit another car and then spun out into the path of the oncoming tractor trailer.

My thoughts and prayers are extended to the Futrell family for these two losses. Each year in the United States there are 37,000 fatalities due to motor vehicle accidents. Additionally, there are almost 2.4 million injuries from crashes.

Head-On Accident In North Fort Worth Kills 2

Last night there was a head-on collision in north Fort Worth that tragically ended two lives. Michael Hariston, 61 and Terry Debo, 46, both from Fort Worth were pronounced dead at the scene. The accident happened about 8 p.m. on U.S. 287 at Blue Mound Road. One of the vehicles was a small truck traveling south in the northbound lane on U.S. 287 that collided with a small S.U.V.

A Fort Worth Fire Department news release stated that Wise County Sheriff's Department dispatchers had received reports of a truck going south in the northbound lanes of U.S. 287. Several Wise County deputies were searching for the truck when the wreck occurred, Fort Worth fire officials said. The northbound lanes of the highway were closed for several hours while authorities investigated the crash.

Our deepest sympathies go out to both Hariston and Debo and their family and friends. Wrong way accidents have been happening frequently around Fort Worth and the outcomes have unfortunately been fatal. Studies show that 72 percent of head-on wrecks take place between 8:00p.m.and 5:00 a.m.

Interstate 20 Closed After Fatal Accident Involving An 18-Wheeler

Eastbound Interstate 20 in Arlington is closed at New York Avenue due to a major accident. Police encourage eastbound motorists to exit at Cooper and Collins to avoid the traffic backup.

Arlington police spokeswoman Tiara Richard said an eastbound Toyota driver changed lanes and struck a second car, forcing the Toyota into a spin. An 18-wheeler hit the Toyota. The driver and a passenger in the Toyota were pronounced dead at the scene. Police have not released the names of the victims pending notification of next of kin. There were no other major injuries. An investigation is under way.

I can’t even imagine the thought of being helpless and seeing a semi-truck about to hit my car. My thoughts and prayers go out to everyone involved in this accident. The story reported sounds like a situation where the big rig truck did not have time to stop. 18-wheelers do not have the ability to stop like cars because they weigh 10,000 pounds compared 4,000 pounds. But a thorough accident investigation will hopefully reveal exactly what happened.

Semi-Truck Accident In Dallas Kills 20 Year Olld & Injures 3 Others

A woman was killed and three other people, including a 3-year-old boy, were hurt this morning when their SUV struck a tractor-trailer on Central Expressway. The crash, which shut down northbound Central, happened shortly after 10:30 a.m. near Loop 12 when the sport utility vehicle crashed into the semi as it tried to make a U-turn.

All four people in the SUV — two 20-year-old women, a 17-year-old girl and the boy — were taken to area hospitals. The 20-year-old passenger, Nakenya White of Dallas, died from her injuries. The conditions of the other people were unknown. The truck driver was unhurt. The crash briefly shut down all northbound lanes, while crews cleaned up diesel fuel from the semi. A single lane has since opened.

I hate seeing that collisions involving 18-wheelers, typical do not have good outcomes. It is not known if the SUV tried to make a quick pass, or if its driver just did not see the truck, but no matter the case my hearts and prayers go out to all the family and friends that will be affected by this tragedy. In Texas alone, there were 4,707 deaths caused by 18-wheelers in Texas. Additionally, 63% of fatal tractor-trailer wrecks were from front-end-collisions; either trucks unable to stop, or head on injuries with other trucks.

Houston Man Killed After Driving Into A Shuttle Bus At DFW Airport

Eric Heebner, 47, of The Woodlands,  has died after his car collided with a shuttle bus at Dallas/ Fort Worth International Airport this morning. He was critically injured this morning on the flyover bridge to Termiinal E at D/FW International Airport when his car slammed into the rear of a shuttle bus. Heebner was critically and was taken to Parkland Memorial Hospital, where he died. No one was injured on the bus, which was carrying airport employees. Traffic to Terminal E was rerouted while authorities cleared the scene.

My thoughts and prayers go out to Heebner’s family and friends. The accident is still under investigation and it will be interesting to see what the cause of the accident was. It is very fortunate that no one in the shuttle bus was injured considering there were an estimated 400 fatalities from bus wrecks in 2007.

Dallas Pedestrian Killed By Hit & Run Driver

Dallas County investigators are seeking help indentifying a hit-and-run driver who killed a 68-year-old man Wednesday near the intersection of Interstate 30 and Buckner Boulevard. James Crosby of Dallas was walking in the 9000 block of eastbound Interstate 30 when he was struck about 9:45 p.m., authorities said. It's unclear whether Crosby was on the freeway.

The vehicle that hit him, described as a small, light-colored pickup, was last seen turning onto Buckner Boulevard. The driver remains at large. Crosby was taken to Baylor University Medical center at Dallas, where he was pronounced dead. The Dallas County Sheriff's Office is asking anyone with information to call 214-749-8641 and ask for the vehicular crimes unit.

My thoughts and prayers go out to the Crosby family and friends. I think any reasonable person would have stopped after hitting someone. There are only a few reasons I can think of why someone might not stop: drunk, on drugs, warrants or no car insurance. However they are all categories of people that should not be on the street, driving a car. I hope that the driver is found and justice is served.
