Interstate 20 Closed After Fatal Accident Involving An 18-Wheeler

Eastbound Interstate 20 in Arlington is closed at New York Avenue due to a major accident. Police encourage eastbound motorists to exit at Cooper and Collins to avoid the traffic backup.

Arlington police spokeswoman Tiara Richard said an eastbound Toyota driver changed lanes and struck a second car, forcing the Toyota into a spin. An 18-wheeler hit the Toyota. The driver and a passenger in the Toyota were pronounced dead at the scene. Police have not released the names of the victims pending notification of next of kin. There were no other major injuries. An investigation is under way.

I can’t even imagine the thought of being helpless and seeing a semi-truck about to hit my car. My thoughts and prayers go out to everyone involved in this accident. The story reported sounds like a situation where the big rig truck did not have time to stop. 18-wheelers do not have the ability to stop like cars because they weigh 10,000 pounds compared 4,000 pounds. But a thorough accident investigation will hopefully reveal exactly what happened.
